Cristy Marsh of Latrobe, a junior majoring in communication at Saint Vincent College, participated in a four-week study abroad program to Cuernavaca, Mexico, through the school’s Spanish department. Marsh and nine other students were in Mexico from Dec. 14 – Jan. 13, fulfilling the core language class requirements.

Marsh participated in the program which included participating in Spanish language courses and cultural courses that included salsa dancing, singing, cooking and vocabulary games. However, the students didn’t stop learning even after they left the classroom. They also visited a Benedictine monastery, a convent, an elementary school and an orphanage. On the weekends, they visited numerous tourist attractions in Mexico, including pyramids, a natural water park and the cities of Taxco and Mexico City.

“We stayed with host families during our month in the country so we were immersed in the Mexican culture 24/7,” Marsh said. “My time in Mexico taught me the Spanish language but also an appreciation for the Mexican culture and its people.”

Marsh detailed some parts of her journey on her “Bearcats on the Road” blog, hosted on the Saint Vincent College website.
