Sylvia Hill Fields, executive director of the Eden Hall Foundation, was honored with the conferral of an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at the December Commencement of Saint Vincent College on Dec. 16.
Presenting the degree was Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., chancellor, and Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., president of Saint Vincent College.
The citation read as follows: “As the first in your family to attend college, your mother reminded you that you were carrying the hopes and ambitions of your ancestors with you. Through your professional accomplishments and your service to others, you are fulfilling the dreams of these previous generations as well as paying tribute to your mother’s passionate spirit, her powerful work ethic and her confidence in the power of education to change lives. You have provided hope and opportunity through your visionary leadership for the Eden Hall Foundation and for the Southwestern Pennsylvania region, including your dedicated service on the boards of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, the Magee-Women’s Research Institute and Foundation, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, your alma mater Seton Hill University and others. Your remarkable contributions to the region, state and nation have been acknowledged with honors such as the Athena Award, selection as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania, recognition from the National Recreation and Parks Association and an invitation to the White House to share information on the exemplary initiatives you have championed. You have been successful not only in your own career, but in providing opportunities for those less fortunate, particularly women and children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Your work has improved the lives of our most vulnerable citizens by expanding access to education, health care and social services through strategic investments in the Pittsburgh Promise, the Neighborhood Academy, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, the Children’s Institute, Holy Family Institute, the Hill House Association and countless other organizations that respond to critical needs in the community. Saint Vincent has been honored to partner with you on projects that have elevated the quality of education in the region, enhanced outreach to underprivileged populations and prepared the next generation to shape a better world for the future. For your visionary leadership, your commitment to improving the lives of those less fortunate, and your profound impact on Southwestern Pennsylvania and beyond, Saint Vincent College proudly confers upon you, Sylvia Hill Fields,
THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS, HONORIS CAUSA, at Saint Vincent College, this Sixteenth Day of December, Two Thousand Seventeen.
