Latrobe Area Attractions and Recreation

Amidst a scenic landscape, the Latrobe area is teeming with countless opportunities for recreation and enrichment. Not only celebrated for its abundant outdoor activities, this region truly has an appreciation for both history and the arts. As a result, there are many exciting things to do and see.

Art

Greater Latrobe School District hosts a unique, museum quality collection of art—one of the largest in the country to be entirely selected and predominantly purchased by students. In the heart of the downtown area, the work of the community is proudly on display at the Latrobe Art Center, a non-profit organization that fosters creativity for artists of all ages. Nearby, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Ligonier display wonderful pieces of American art.

Performing Arts

Engaging shows can be seen year-round at the Palace Theatre in Greensburg, the Greensburg Civic Theater, the Ligonier Theatre (home to the Valley Players), Mountain Playhouse (situated in a 200-year-old gristmill in Jennerstown), and Saint Vincent College Summer Theatre (shows run from late May to mid-August).

Architecture

Two of the last Frank Lloyd Wright houses (Fallingwater and the Hagan House at Kentuck Knob) are still accessible to the public and within an hour’s drive of Latrobe.

Historical Sites

To see history come alive, take a trip to Fort Ligonier, Bushy Run Battlefield or Hanna’s Town. Not only functional depots, Latrobe Train Station (built in 1903) and Greensburg Train Station (built in 1911) also serve as unique places to showcase the region’s roots in the railroad industry.

Outdoor Pursuits

The spectacular Laurel Highlands offer a scenic backdrop for a wide range of outdoor activities. Among them are: hiking, riding, skiing, (both downhill and cross country), mountain biking, hunting, fishing, and whitewater rafting. And since Latrobe is the birthplace of Arnold Palmer, it is no surprise that the area offers a number of public and private golf facilities. Other recreational opportunities exist in much- anticipated seasonal events. Among them are the Latrobe Fourth of July celebration, Westmoreland Agricultural Fair, Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival, Fort Ligonier Days, the Ligonier Highland Games, Steelers Training Camp at Saint Vincent College and Overly’s Country Christmas. Additionally, the picturesque Idlewild and SoakZone in nearby Ligonier, featuring 40 acres of family fun, was named world’s best amusement park for children in 2010.
